The Human Impact

Enjoy the underwater world responsibly...

The ocean is a truly amazing, awe-inspiring thing...enjoy it! Get out there snorkeling, learn to dive, spend a day at the beach. Whichever you choose, make sure to do so responsibly so this wonderful world is there for you to revisit and for future generations to explore.

How can you minimize our human impact on the environment?

  • Don't litter: Even trash miles away from the sea can make its way into the marine ecosystem. Winds, rivers, runoff, animals, and even human traffic can transport garbage to our shores, so always find a recepticle for waste, or carry one with you for disposal later.

  • Set the example! When out snorkeling or diving, don't stand on coral heads. Be mindful of your fins, lest you accidently kick over a sponge or sea fan that has been growing longer than you've been alive! If you see someone committing these errors in underwater etiquette, kindly but positively correct them...suggest an alternative that doesn't harm the environment and reinforces positive values.

  • Follow the "Leave No Trace" philosophy to interacting with the environment. "Take only photographs, leave only footprints." In fact, since we shouldn't be standing on the reef or seafloor, don't leave footbprints! Leave shells in the sea, as they are current or future homes for a variety of creatures. Avoid touching the reef or any fish or turtles, as the oils on your hand can deteriorate the protective mechanisms of marine life.
